FAQs
The Intensive Trauma Treatment Centre delivers a short-term, intensive therapy designed to treat severe trauma symptoms. The treatment primarily combines EMDR2.0 and prolonged imaginal exposure therapy to help patients confront and reframe traumatic memories.

We treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD (c-PTSD), and Adjustment Disorder using evidence-based therapies, mainly prolonged imaginal exposure (PE), and Eye Movement and Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR 2.0.) We may use EMDR standard and other Trauma Focused CBT strategies (but this is case dependent).

Both are based on the same core method. The difference is mostly how we help your brain process trauma.
Standard EMDR is like gently untangling a knot. EMDR 2.0 uses a few extra tasks, so the knot loosens faster. It helps the brain process more quickly. For some clients it often feels lighter, faster, or less emotionally heavy. You might like to read more about EMDR 2.0 here.
Clients return to their usual care teams (e.g., GP, psychiatrist, psychologist) or if needed, recommendations and referrals are explored.
ITTC provides 30 min follow-up reviews at 1 week, and in the following months, to review ongoing functional or therapeutic goals and to review the ongoing efficacy of the program.

Clients can see different therapists throughout the four days of treatment. This prevents treatment from drifting into general counselling, ensures therapists and clients remain focused on trauma resolution techniques, and increases accountability. Use of benzodiazepines interferes with trauma memory processing and is contraindicated for ITTC therapy modalities.
- Substances that interfere with trauma processing (e.g., substance use disorders).
- Current acute crisis or suicidality that requires stabilisation.
- Severe dissociation may require preparatory work.
- Logistical issues such as travel or accommodation.
We provide guidance to overcome these barriers wherever possible.
Conventional weekly therapy can take years and has higher dropout rates.
The ITTC program is:
- Combination-based: Uses both EMDR and PE, which together improve treatment response rates.
- Intensive: Faster progress with a clear start and finish that reduces dropout rates.
- Structured: Therapist rotation ensures treatment remains goal focused.

According to treatment guidelines for C-PTSD, psychotherapy for adults should start with a “stabilisation phase”, focusing on self-regulation strategies. The premise being that after this an individual would be better able to tolerate trauma-focused treatment. This has been critically evaluated (De Jongh et.al., 2016) and found no rigorous research to support this view. Therefore, risking clients being denied or delayed in receiving evidence-based treatment.
Indeed, trauma-related symptoms improve after trauma-focused treatment. It may well be the case that prolonged exposure and EMDR therapy improve emotion dysregulation often seen in PTSD by reducing the high sensitivity and distress associated with trauma-related stimuli.
